The Island of Bermuda, located in the Atlantic Ocean, is approximately 25 miles long and ideally situated between the United States and Europe.
Bermuda is a self governing colony with an elected legislature and is the oldest British colony, having been founded in 1609. The Bermuda Government is cognisant of the need to maintain Bermuda’s place in the forefront of international business and is sensitive to the needs of that market and of investor protection without introducing onerous regulations. Bermuda’s GDP per capita is the highest in the world, thus allowing a substantial degree of economic stability with little or no unemployment or material Government debt.
The Island’s favourable regulatory, legal and fiscal frameworks combine to make it one of the most successful of the world’s offshore financial centres. Bermuda enjoys a convenient geographical location and time zone, an agreeable climate, political stability, easy access by air and sea and excellent telecommunications. Other advantages include Bermuda’s highly developed infrastructure, the Island’s high standard of professional and technical support services and an advantageous regulatory environment that includes tax neutrality and freedom from foreign exchange control for non-resident undertakings.
As a business centre, Bermuda is well known as the captive reinsurance capital of the world. Most of the Fortune 500 companies have subsidiaries incorporated and managed in Bermuda as part of their risk management objectives. Bermuda has also become one of the leading markets for excess liability, directors and officers, catastrophe and finite reinsurance coverage, with combined annual premium income and capacity measured in billions of dollars.
In addition to the insurance and reinsurance industry, Bermuda has become an attractive jurisdiction for companies and other legal entities engaged in international trade, ship and aircraft owning and leasing, personal investment holding, asset protection, as well as trust management and mutual fund investment.
